Sexual Abuse in Foster Care

The trauma for children who are ripped from abusive homes - even in an attempt to rescue them from abusive family memebers- can be devastating. But imagine the horror of being subject to sexual abuse while in the foster home that is supposed to be a refuge or "safe haven." This is too often the case for many children who have been in the foster-care system. In fact, according to a sudy conducted by John Hopkins University, the rate of sexual abuse within the foster-care system is more than four times as high as in the general population. What is also quite disturbing is how easy it is for a normal family to have a child removed from their home and placed in an abusive foster home. This broadcast will explore the true story of Marcia Engels, who was sexually abused while in foster care.

Dealing With the System

One lawyer (Arlaine Rockey) offers specific advice for what she terms as "Protective Parents."  “Protective parents” are those acting to protect their children from abuse, be it physical or sexual.
